Grants Advance Equity in the U.S. Criminal Legal System
Urban Institute: Catalyst Grant Program

Application deadline: November 22, 2024
Grant amount: $40,000 in grant funds and additional assistance and technology
Description: The Catalyst Grant Program is a collaboration between the Urban Institute and the Microsoft Justice Reform Initiative to support the efforts of nonprofit organizations in the United States to use data and technology to advance racial equity and reform in the adult criminal legal system. Support is provided for local projects that advance the focus areas of the Microsoft Justice Reform Initiative, which include supporting policies, programs, and practices that prevent unnecessary system involvement and decrease racial and ethnic disparities at the front end of the criminal legal system (i.e., criminal legal system activities and relevant actors up to and including sentencing). Locally embedded 501(c)(3) organizations based in the U.S., excluding colleges and universities, are eligible to apply. The focus is on organizations embedded in communities of color, particularly Black communities. The Program provides funds to cover project costs, project implementation assistance, peer learning opportunities, and access to Microsoft technology and related support.

People With Disabilities Foundation

Application deadline: November 6, 2024
Grant amount: $5,000 to $12,500
Description: The mission of the People With Disabilities Foundation (PWDF) is to provide education and advocacy for people with psychiatric and/or developmental disabilities so that they can achieve equal opportunities in all aspects of life. PWDF provides grants to nonprofit organizations in the United States for work to integrate people with psychiatric and/or developmental disabilities into the whole of society. Grants are provided for advocacy, education, vocational programs, and other areas of particular impact to people with psychiatric and/or developmental disabilities. Applicant organizations must have been in operations a minimum of three years.

Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation

Application deadline: Applications may be submitted between April 1 and December 31, annually.
Geographic scope: United States, with some emphasis on Florida and Indiana
Description: The Brooks and Joan Fortune Family Foundation was established to support education and the arts. While the Foundation has historically supported nonprofit organizations in Florida and Indiana, requests from around the country are considered. The Foundation primarily supports education, art, and outreach programs and projects. In general, the Foundation desires to support specific activities that result in a defined outcome rather than general operating funds or fundraising campaigns.

Grants Benefit Service Members and Veterans
Bob Woodruff Foundation

Application deadline: None (Applicants that wish to be considered for the Foundation’s first review of the calendar year should apply by January 8.)
Description: The Bob Woodruff Foundation supports programs in the United States that help service members, veterans, and their families and caregivers thrive. The focus is on programs that improve the health and well-being of service members, veterans, and their families and caregivers; improve social determinants of health; decrease barriers to accessing physical and mental healthcare; increase accessibility to programming that fosters a healthy lifestyle; and enhance opportunities for veterans to thrive after service. Nonprofit organizations that provide direct services to the military and veteran population and have two years of gross receipts greater than $50,000 are eligible to apply.

First Interstate BancSystem Foundation

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: Communities served by First Interstate Bank in 14 states
Grant amount: The minimum grant amount is $2,500. There is no minimum amount for donations.
Description: First Interstate Bank and the First Interstate BancSystem Foundation provide support in communities served by First Interstate Bank in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming. The majority of the Foundation's grants are focused on alleviating poverty by assisting low- and moderate-income individuals and communities. Poverty-related interests include hunger and homelessness, affordable housing, and improving the economic stability of individuals. Additional areas of interest include arts and culture, civic and community affairs, K-12 and higher education, health, human services, and sustainability. Nonprofit organizations and units of government are eligible to apply for grants. For donations, applicant organizations do not have to be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Vermont Mutual Insurance Group Charitable Giving Fund

Application deadline: February 15, May 15, August 15, and November 15, annually
Geographic scope: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York State, Rhode Island, and Vermont
Description: The mission of the Vermont Mutual Insurance Group Charitable Giving Fund is to enhance the quality of life in communities where Vermont Mutual conducts business, including Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The Fund supports nonprofit organizations that help to build, maintain, and enrich healthy lives and strong, vibrant communities. Areas of interest include education, both traditional and non-traditional, focused on inspiring academic excellence, leadership, and community service; foster youth; community-based programs that build better communities; and basic needs such as affordable housing, homelessness, and hunger.

Grants Target Early Childhood Education in Colorado
Buell Foundation

Application deadline: January 15, May 1, and September 2, 2025
Geographic scope: Colorado
Grant amount: Generally $10,000 to $50,000
Description: The Buell Foundation supports the positive development of children in Colorado. The Foundation’s current funding priority is on programs that support the education and development of children zero to five, with emphasis on programs in rural Colorado. Programmatic and operational grants are provided in the following areas: assessment and evaluation, behavior and social competence, early childhood and preschool programs, home visitation, quality improvements, parenting education, and professional development and education. Capital grants support capital campaigns for licensed child care and early childhood education serving infants through preschool. The Foundation also provides support for proven, medically accurate teen pregnancy prevention programs. Nonprofit organizations and government entities are eligible to apply. Applicants are encouraged to call the Foundation’s program officer for their region before applying.

Animal Welfare Organizations Funded in Iowa
The Miccio Foundation

Application deadline: The next application deadline is November 1, 2024.
Geographic scope: Iowa
Description: The Miccio Foundation supports organizations in Iowa that have a demonstrated commitment to animal welfare. Examples include, but are not limited to, private and governmental animal shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, volunteer foster organizations, and local animal control agencies. Eligible projects should have an immediate, measurable impact on improving animal welfare in a target community, including spay/neuter programs, facility renovation, medical care, humane education, caging, and adoption support. The Foundation awards Standard grants, typically around $3,500, to organizations licensed by the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) as pounds or shelters. ​Organizations with 501(c)(3) status (IDALS pound or shelter license not required) are eligible for the Mini grant of up to $1,500. In addition, the Jean M. Walker grant of up to $2,500 is available to 501(c)(3) organizations regardless of IDALS licensing to raise public awareness about the humane treatment of animals.

Description: The Consumer Recycling Education and Outreach grant program aims to fund projects that will meet the following objectives and reduce greenhouse gases: decrease wasted food from households, expand markets for and sales of compost, inform the public about new or existing residential food waste composting programs, provide information about the materials that are accepted as part of a residential food waste composting program, and increase collection rates and decrease physical contamination in residential food waste composting programs.
