Biodiversity refers to the variety of all life upon Earth. Biodiversity is essential for the health and survival of humans - having impacts on our climate resilience, food security and overall human health. And yet many species currently face extinction, threatening a secure level of biodiversity. There are many nonprofits that look to tackle the various causes of this loss of biodiversity. But these nonprofits can only do their essential work thanks to the generous funding provided by biodiversity grants.

These grants can be used for all sorts of impactful initiatives. This can include things such as habitat restoration, protection of endangered species, community education on biodiversity or the removal of invasive species. 

There are many different organizations that provide these kinds of biodiversity grants. These include public-private partnerships, such as the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund or private foundations such as the Rufford Foundation. 

When drafting a biodiversity grant proposal, it is essential to use scientific data to back up your claim. Depending on your nonprofit’s mission, you may be interested in statistics such as species population data, habitat fragmentation, or the ecological and economic benefits of biodiversity. Good places to get started on collecting this kind of data can include the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the UN Biodiversity Lab and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
