Civil society organizations have a key role in fighting for human rights, democracy and community development. There are many nonprofits who work directly in these spaces, or support other organizations that work at promoting strong civil societies. 

These nonprofits can only do their work thanks to the generous funding provided by civil society grants. These grants can be put towards all kinds of initiatives. This could include advocacy for human rights and social equality, community organizing or capacity-building for grassroots organizations. 

There are many organizations that might provide these kinds of grants. This includes many private foundations, such as the  Ford Foundation, the Global Fund for Women and the MacArthur Foundation. 

When drafting a civil society grant proposal, it's important to back up your claims with data and extensive information. Just what kind of information you’ll need will depend heavily on the mission of your nonprofit. This could include statistics and reports on civic engagement, voter participation, corruption, human rights violations and government accountability. Good places to start learning more about these topics could include the United Nations Development Programme, or the Pew Research Center.
