Too often in the developed world we take our energy for granted, presuming that we’ll always have the power to warm us, light our homes, and power all our forms of entertainment. There are many places around the world, however, where access to power is unreliable, and the lights can go off at any moment. And in places where the power flows freely, we are often far from responsible when it comes to adhering to sustainable practices.

There are many nonprofits operating to help provide more reliable energy and areas that need it, and helping spread information and methods for more sustainable energy usage across the world. They’re able to do this through the generous funding provided by energy grants. These grants can be given to a wide range of beneficent programs. These can include the installation of renewable energy systems, retrofitting buildings with more energy-efficient technology, or developing community-based energy education programs.

Energy grants can come from a wide range of sources. These can sometimes include federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency. Many state and local agencies also provide funding opportunities to encourage more sustainable and clean energy developments. There are also plenty of private foundations involved in this space, such as the Energy Foundation.

When preparing an energy grant proposal, detailed technical data is key. You need to be able to prove that there is a lack of sustainable energy that your nonprofit is uniquely suited to address. Data that you might want to include could include energy consumption rates, potential cost savings from upgrades, and potential environmental impact. The U.S. Department of Energy and EPA are great places to start when collecting data.
