There are over 300,000 children in the foster care system in America. This is an essential system, but one with an extraordinary amount of stress upon it. Foster children are at significantly greater risk of incarceration, mental health issues and homelessness. There are many nonprofits with missions revolving around helping foster children overcome and avoid these challenges. But these nonprofits are only able to do their good work through the generous funding provided by foster care grants.

These grants can be put towards a wide range of useful programs. These could include the upgrade of residential care facilities, the provision of mental health services as well as educational and life skills training. The end goal is to help foster children have a fulfilling childhood and make the transition into successful, secure adults.

These foster care grants can come from a wide range of sources. Traditionally, these included federal agencies, such as the U.S. Administration for Children and Families. There are also many state and local government organizations that specialize in child welfare and social services that provide foster care grants. Many private foundations are also involved in this space, such as the Annie E. Casey Foundation. 

 When creating a foster care grant proposal, it's essential to use data to illustrate the gap in service that your nonprofit can fill. In the case of foster care grants this data could include statistics on foster youth including educational attainment, economic performance or mental health challenges. You can source this data from places such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, local child welfare agencies, or academic research on the subject.
