The first step to making health decisions in your life is being aware of what are the best decisions to make. Good health education and literacy is naturally tied to improved health, and reduction in avoidable hospital visits. However, there is a significant gap within the populace as far as the ability to parse the often complex topic of healthcare. 

There are many nonprofits that seek to address this gap in literacy, something they are only able to do thanks to the generous funding provided by health education grants. These grants can be put towards a wide range of programs, including educational workshops, more accessible health education materials and training for health educators. 

These grants can come from a wide range of sources. These traditionally included federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many state and local health departments, as well as private and community foundations, are also grant-providers in this space. 

When drafting a health education grant proposal, it's essential to use data to outline the need that your nonprofit can fill. In this case, data could include statistics such as current health literacy levels among certain populations, rates of avoidable chronic diseases, or lack of access to healthcare education. You can find this information from federal institutions like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or from local and state health department reports.
