“In-kind donations” refers to the contributions of goods or services rather than monetary gifts. These represent a unique opportunity for many nonprofits across a range of charitable activities. The classic examples of in-kind donations are food drives and clothing donations. But this can extend to the offering of services as well, such as tech support or legal advice. These are all ways for a nonprofit to get aid beyond grants and donations.

These in-kind donations can come from a wide variety of sources. Often, these kinds of donations are the most “grassroots,” coming from local businesses and members of the community. Local businesses are a great source of food, event spaces, and even surplus office supplies.

Connecting for in-kind donations often follows a bit of a different trajectory than grants. There’s a lot more focus on building up a strong working relationship, so you can rely on a continuous flow of in-kind donations for support. At the same time, soliciting in-kind donations, like grant proposals, is all about telling a story and inviting the donors to take an active part in that story. Make clear the benefit in-kind donations will have, and who they will be helping.
