Books are perhaps one of the important inventions in human history. They allow for someone's thoughts to be put down into a physical and tangible form. They can be used to entertain, inform and enlighten. Even in a time when other forms of media have become more popular, books are still essential as a way to learn and expand horizons - if not more important. Libraries, then, hold a special role in our society. Many modern libraries go beyond just providing books, being a community hub where anyone can access the internet or other creative and educational facilities. Libraries, however, are not free to operate, and many require the generous aid of nonprofits to operate.

These nonprofits, in turn, require the aid of library grants to be able to fund their good work. Library grants can be used for a wide range of purposes. These can include the construction and renovation of library facilities, the upgrade of computer systems and digital collections or running literacy and educational outreach programs.

Library grants can come from a wide range of sources. These can include federal agencies such as the Institute of Museum and Library Services. There are also many state and local government initiatives that provide library grants. Community foundations and private foundations may also step into the role of library grant providers.

When preparing a library grant proposal, you need to make sure that you bring the data to the table that can demonstrate a clear need for your programming ideas. Statistics on literacy rate, digital access and other community education needs are a good place to start. You then need to clearly articulate how you can meet these needs, and how the funding from the grant will be spent on these projects.
