Earth’s surface is, in a majority, taken up by the oceans. The waters of the earth play an essential role in the climate and biodiversity of the planet, as well as sustaining the livelihoods of countless people around the globe. And yet, human exploitation and pollution of the ocean is pushing the limits of what the ocean can support. Many nonprofits have made it their mission to try and help promote sustainability in regards to marine issues. 

These nonprofits are only able to pursue these missions thanks to the generous funding provided by marine issue grants. These grants can be put towards all kinds of initiatives relating to marine issues. This could include habitat restoration, marine wildlife protection, pollution reduction and cleanup and the promotion of sustainable aquaculture practices. 

There are many different organizations that might provide these kinds of grants. Traditionally this might include federal agencies. There are also many private foundations involved in this space, such as the Pew Charitable Trusts, or the Ocean Foundation. 

When drafting a marine issues grant proposal, it’s essential to use data to back up your claims. You need to prove the scope of the issue you are targeting, and how your nonprofit can make a difference. Example statistics you might want to bring up could include trends in aquaculture stocks, pollution amounts, or habitat losses. Good places to start collecting this data could include the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre or the Global Fishing Watch.
