Music is one of the oldest and purest forms of artistic expression out there. It is fundamentally human to want to be able to express our beauty and emotions in such a way. For many, music is truly their lifelong passion. But access to the music industry, or even a career as a musician, is not easily accessible to everyone. One can only imagine the amazing music you’ve never heard because its creators don’t have the means to either compose, create, or distribute.

There are many nonprofits that seek to support the thriving artistic communities in their regions, including the music scene. These nonprofits could be supporting the conservation of timeless classical traditions or trying to help new musicians on the cutting edge. In either event, these nonprofits will rely on the funding from grants in order to continue the support they give to music. This support could be towards music education programs or scholarships, performances or venues. These are all ways to not only support musicians but make live music more accessible within a community.

Nonprofits can find music grants from a wide variety of sources. Foundations like the NEA and the Mockingbird Foundation have traditionally given heavy support to music via grants. There are also plenty of corporate sponsors who provide music grants, such as the new Fender Play Foundation.

When writing grant proposals for music grants, you have to be a bit artistic yourself. Get passionate about expressing the cultural, emotional, and very human importance of access to music and the arts. Data will also be useful when discussing factors such as gaps in access to music education for children.
