Healthcare access is essential to living a full, productive, and happy life. And yet, many Americans live in areas without full access to all the healthcare they need. The COVID-19 pandemic proves how vulnerable public health services are in America to emergency situations - and how valuable they are overall. Nonprofits work tirelessly to improve the public health infrastructure across the nation, and beyond.

But they can only fund these activities through the support given by public health grants. These grants can be used for a wide range of purposes, including disease prevention campaigns and tackling factors that lead to greater public health risks, such as homelessness, poor nutrition, and lack of health education. They could also be used on a more strategic scale, for policy advocacy and community engagement initiatives.

Public health grants can be found from a wide variety of sources. These include federal agencies like the CDC and HRSA, state health departments and local health departments. There are many public foundations that also provide public health grants, such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Kresge Foundation.

When preparing a public health grant proposal, it's important that you collate your data in a clear and readable fashion. You want your proposal to clearly illuminate the gap in public health within the community of your choice. Data that you might want to refer to could include disparities in healthcare, prevalence of chronic diseases, as well as factors that could pose public health risks, such as homelessness, nutrition levels and lack of healthcare education in the region.
