We can sometimes take for granted all the wonders of the modern world, which have made our lives that much easier, safer, healthier and more equitable. All of this is possible through constant research, fueling the advancements in fields like healthcare, education and environmental protection. Many nonprofits today are dedicated to pushing forward the use of research as a tool for good, improving the lives of people across the nation, and the world.

But research always takes money. Nonprofit requires research grants in order to pay staff, collect data and buy equipment, just for starters. Often, such nonprofits need to run studies and tests for years in order to get the results they are looking for and will have to find a way to remain operational throughout.

Nonprofits looking for research grants can find them from a variety of sources. Some governmental organizations that traditionally provide grants include the NIH and the NSF.  There are many corporate philanthropies that also provide grants for this purpose, such as the Gates Foundation.

When preparing proposals for research grants, you need to be able to prove that there is at least a decent chance of the research gaining valuable and workable results. You’ll need to be able to paint a clear story of where research in this field has succeeded before, and where such successes can come in the future. And through this, you need to be able to tell that story in a way that is accessible and understandable.
