Social entrepreneurship refers to the application of innovative business strategies to issues of social change. The idea is to create new enterprises that have sustainable solutions to all kinds of social, environmental and economic challenges. This concept is, naturally, of great interest to many nonprofits, who may make it their mission to support social entrepreneurship, or engage in it themselves.

Social entrepreneurship requires funding to get started - and a great place to get this funding initially is from grants. These social entrepreneurship grants can be used for all kinds of initiatives, including providing seed funding, technical assistance or scaling. There are a variety of organizations that give this category of grant. This includes many private foundations, such as the Skoll Foundation and Echoing Green.

When drafting a social entrepreneurship grant, you have to have a clear business plan laid out, with hard numbers and solid estimations. You need to be able to prove that you have a clearly scalable plan to tackle your chosen social issues.
