Some nonprofits can manage things the old-fashioned way - you don’t need much in the way of advanced technology to run a bake sale. But for many nonprofits, their core function is in improving technological access to their communities or pushing the development of technology that can significantly improve the lives of people across the world. Sometimes, the nonprofit itself is the one who needs the technological edge to better pursue its mission.

Nonprofits in any of these situations will often rely on technology grants. The purpose of these grants are nearly endless, helping bolster the technological capacity of either the nonprofit or the communities it serves. In the modern world, there is an increasing demand for upgrades to software and hardware to let communities and nonprofits compete in the digital landscape. 

Technology grants can come from a variety of sources. Many tech companies offer corporate social responsibility initiatives that might provide technology grants, for example. There are also private foundations that specialize in innovation and technology, such as the Knight Foundation.

Preparing technology grants can be difficult. If you’re simply trying to fill a technological gap in your community, you can rely on data that demonstrates that gap - such as lack of access to reliable internet connections.
